A Better Option Than Detention Is Available

Re “Actually, It’s Judge-Busters,” editorial, May 20: The “Gangbusters” bill, sponsored by Rep. J. Randy Forbes (R-Va.), focuses on detention as the primary means to control gangs. We’ve been there and done that. Let’s hope that Congress will support the better option, the Senate measure co-sponsored by Sens. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) and Orrin G. Hatch (R-Utah).

The Senate measure is far more expansive and creative in that, in addition to detention, it focuses on prevention and intervention. The three-pronged approach has a much better chance of succeeding. We have seen that the single approach of detention does not work; allocating additional resources to prevention and intervention is long past due.
