I do not agree with bigger government as that is how most of the economic mess started in the first place.
Granted, the free-market took a major hit on Wall Street, but capitalism is the best economic system ever created because it allows for self-accomplishment and freedom to make choices on how to live your own life.
Whatever happen to the principles of self-government that our founding fathers fought for! Where is the concept of taking personal responsibility for your life? Whatever happen to the idea of personal achievement and accomplishment? Does anyone remember the religious principles that made our country great?

FDR actually influenced the WHOLE WORLD, as young Australian, I remember my father telling me how the New Deal put him back in a job. his keynsian economcs was mirrored in Australia with great success.
It seem from a far that the US could actually learn from the Australian economy and Government with a regulated banking and financial sector, a superannuation scheme, a budget surplus and infrastructure spending that creates employment.
. Its time for the brightest and the bes to step up to he plate and deliver for America.

If the Republicans really wanted less government. The why are there Republican Politicians? If they held that belief literally, then they shouldn't have jobs. We don't need a military. No social security. Why have Congress and the President anyway? Or laws for that matter. Conservative chaos. Why not? Look, it took government to free the slaves. It took government to enact voting rights to women and minorities. It takes government to keep or food and drugs safe. Otherwise, we'd be like China and let business run wild. Lead, melamine. What's next?

Republican all talk about "less government". Deregulation. Let the free-market system work its way out if this. I'm inclined to say yes. BUT, it was lack of government oversight that lead to the Great Depression under Pres. Hoover. It took Teddy Roosevelt to enact anti-trust laws. Unbridled, unregulated capitalism can lead to abuse. Today, the SEC took their eyes off the ball. As the character Gordon Gekko from "Wall Street said, "Greed is good." But greed is simply that. Greed. And that's what got us into this horrible place.

Ah yet another of Rosa's simplistic, feeble-minded pieces. If only she ran the world, then everyhting would be just right. Would some Times editor with a backbone please send send her back to wherever she came from and spare us from more drivel. If she really had courage, she'd run for office or get a real job.

There is a response , a solution to government problems such as the ones you mention ... and more . You are right . The American People need to be treated as citizens by their government , not consumers . And the way to get their government back is by choosing representatives that take no corporate or PAC dollars , but get their campaign funding from the People . Like The Dali Lama said , "There ios HOPE with the Green Party . You have Green Party in America ? If so , I want to join . " He got that one right .And so did you .

Sometimes it is necessary to reformat the hard disk without saving corrupted files so that you get a clean installation. Lets not waste valuable disk space with faulty programs that have been proved to be harmful.
Let's clear the cache but do not delete the history, it is to be learned from. Lets get back to basics and reboot.

It's amazing that "Big Government" is being blamed by the fools that voted for Bush-Cheney. Under Reagan, Poppa Bush and Baby Bush, the regulatory arms of the Federal Government were allowed to whither to their present state of impotence. Now that the credit crunch has come, we're all "Born-again "Big Government" advocates.

Heavy handed government, not free markets, got us into this mess. Subsidized, guaranteed mortgages with local help from NIMBY restrictive zoning inflated the real estate bubble.
And regarding Social Security, we are eventually looking at a bailout of not 700B but over 2 TRILLION. That's the so-called trust fund -- surplus payroll tax revenue "loaned" to the general fund to hide the true size of the budget deficit.
