Why we should not support Suzanne Shumway

Editor:

I am writing this letter on why we should not elect Suzanne Shumway as our next State Representative.

Suzanne continues telling us that she has all these great ideas to turn Michigan around, but hasn't seemed to think it's important to share any of them with us. Frank Foster released a detailed "Five Point Plan" with specific proposals and ideas when he ran for office; maybe Suzanne should do the same? It'd be nice to know what she actually wants to do if elected.

Suzanne Shumway is a "single interest" candidate. She seems to be primarily focused on education issues, at the neglect of so many other important issues in our state. The state of Michigan needs to be also focused on balancing our budget and Mrs. Shumway seems to not understand the way a budget works. We need to be able to keep our economic growth going by not raising taxes on our businesses in order to supply them enough resources to hire new workers. This is simple trickledown economics; Mrs. Shumway is unable to comprehend.

We've seen the failed liberal policies of the past decade, as Michigan rose to the highest unemployment in the nation and we weren't able to pass a balanced state budget. Suzanne wants to tell you she is different, but her ideas and approaches have failed before. Do we want to go back to the times of the Granholm administration? When these policies were passed by a Democratic house and senate? When Michigan had the highest unemployment rate in the nation? When Michigan did not balance a budget? I think not my fellow readers.

Let us tell Suzanne Shumway that we do not want her representing us and that we want to continue to let Rep. Frank Foster represent us.

The Michigan Education Association has endorsed Obama for president. I would hope that the education system in this state still teaches the basic philosophy, "With responsibility comes accountability." It's time to put their money where their mouth is. The problem of education funding could be solved in a big way should Obama get re-elected.

Let's say an average school system spends $750,000 per year on health care premiums for the employees of the school system. The school board "could" decide to pay the $2,000 per year, per employee penalty and opt out of providing health care benefits, thus giving all the employees a bright shiny new "Obama Care" card. That's right, the educators can enjoy the same benefits that every other American tax payer would receive. This would free up over a half million dollars to go back into direct education costs for our children.

The beauty of this plan is that the MEA should not have any reservations or partake in any union grievances for the benefits received because they have endorsed this very plan.

Now what would happen if this spread nationwide through every government agency in the country and private business? Now tell me that this is not the beginning of a socialized health care. if this were to happen, there would be no need for health care insurance companies, small hospitals would close, drug companies would no longer develop new cures and our children would no longer want to be a doctor or nurse.

History has proven time and time again that government cannot provide services cheaper than the private sector. They have a hard time keeping Medicare afloat.

There is one thing Obama and I agree on ... "It is time for a change."  Let's vote for a "future" on Nov. 6.
