  • Jack Scott is a crazy old man. There's not that many power outages involving mylar balloons and why does he have to take this issue so seriously?

  • BTW, Scott needs to go study some physics on the issue and learn about static electricity, voltages, currents, and such. He'll find that the electrical potential for Mylar is so low that it doesn't cause power failures. In fact, a wet cotton string on a latex balloon conducts more power. Ask Dr. Franklin about that one, as I seem to recall him doing exactly that in a thunderstorm once.

  • Scott has been snorting that helium too much. SB1499 was originally a bill that would require restaruant grease haulers to register with the Food and Agriculture Department. That's right, register grease haulers, which could include all bio-diesel vehicles. That got the gut-and-amend treatment for this stupid balloon proposal.

  • What we could do is impose a 120 million dollar reimbursement tax on the sale of these balloons. This money could be used to pay for the repair costs and to reimburse business and Family for lost income and damages. Either that or put tracking device's on every single balloon and when a balloon shorts out a system disrupting power to 10's of thousands of customers. We can easily send the resulting bill to the busness that sold the balloon. Since everyone selling these balloons is claiming that they don't short out power lines or cause and problems. Then they shouldn't have anything to worry about should they?

  • I can't stand selfish, self centered, business owners who feel that its everyone else's responsibility to pay the cost for the damages their products cause. Helium filled Mylar balloons are responsible for over 120 million dollars in lost review each year. PGE, SMUD, So. Ca Edison, Fire Fighters and law enforcement all back legislation banning these floating power line killers.

    Pallstar communications @ 2:05 PM PDT, Jun 11, 2008

  • So a mylar balloon went into power and it knocked out power? Thus we should ban them? THen what about all those times when a car crashes into a line or a power box and knocks power out? Should we ban cars too? Maybe people like Jack Scott should spend time dealing w/ actual problems like illegal aliens and the worst public school's this side of Iraq.

  • Again special interests using dim public figures to rid themselves of an OVERSTATED nuisance or increase profit. More $ goes into the economy from the manufacture and sale of Mylar balloons than the CONTRIVED impact SCE/Scott claim. More joy comes from gifting them than any inconvenience they MAY cause IF one causes an outage. Do you recall environmentalists convincing us to use PLASTIC bags in order to save the trees cut down for recyclable PAPER bags? I'll relish the day a panic ensues because we are poisoning our groundwater with MERCURY from the CFLs Lloyd Levine is forcing us to buy. Pols should not play scientists.

  • I called both the CPUC and Mr. Scott's offices on Monday and was transfered to various people until reaching the voice mail of those who keep track of such things and be able to "walk me through the pros and cons of the legislation." As far as I know, neither has called me back. So stop with the stories and provide the proof - dates, times, and photos of charred balloons. And while you're at it, would you please ban hot summer days, windstorms, and lightning?

    Pam Carlson @ 8:52 AM PDT, Jun 11, 2008

  • Why doesn't Senator Scott spend money on educating the public on the current laws in the state regarding weighting down every helium filled foil balloon instead of actually OUTLAWING them all! It seems to be a bit extreme considering my business and many others like mine will be be directly and severely affected by the ban on HELIUM filled foil balloons. No one wants to buy an air filled foil balloon- they do not float! Rocket Science, you say, Senator Scott?

    Amanda @ 7:27 AM PDT, Jun 11, 2008

  • Thank G-D we don't have an $18 BILLION budget shortfall to deal with ... and c'mon Jack, let's go all the way here. We should make the sale or possession for sale of Mylar Balloons a capital offense and take those rotten vendors STRAIGHT to the death chamber at San Quentin!!! .
