Some drugs are not reliable in all patients in generic form. Pharmacists know this, patients know this, Doctors know this. I take some brand names and will resist a change in those, although the insurance continually pesters me to make one. My Pharmacist knows better. I, after many years, know better.

The writer of this piece simply does not know what she is talking about; in fact, she sounds like a shill for the HMO trade group. Time after time, study after study, it has been documented generics and the real thing are NOT exactly the same. Patients and Physicians know this. HMO's reluctantly include a means for patients and physicians to demand the real mccoy medications due , usually, to the seriousness of side-effects involved.

I'm skeptical about the so-call problem of varying effects in some people. If true, doesn't that mean that the real thing will have varying effects in other people. So yeah, I think it's a red herring.

Generic drugs really do work. Critics of generic drugs tend to be those whose patents expired.

here in mexico we use generic drugs rather than the product made by the original manufacturer because of the large price difference. there is no difference in effect. those who complain the generic drug does not work for them are mostly suffering from a reverse placebo effect, that is it does not work because they really believe it will not work.. the mexican national health program(IMSS) uses older drugs also to avoid the tragic vioxx effect of unknown long term problems.

Yes I use generic drugs and they are equally effective. All drugs must conform to the pharmacopeial standards laid dwon by each country and if the manufacturer and the drug conforms to these standrds ,they are as effecitve as branded drugs. The big industry is uncomfortable because now the branded products are available at a fraction of the original cost and claims and discussions of bio equivalence, blood levels, rate of absorption and similar issue are brought in!
