McCain calls for court conservatives, reversal of Roe
Republican presidential candidate John McCain has vowed that if elected he would appoint judges who “strictly interpret the Constitution of the United States and do not legislate from the bench.”
The Arizona senator, looking to improve his standing with the party’s conservative voters, also says the court decision that legalized abortion should be overturned.
“I do not support Roe vs. Wade. It should be overturned,” McCain told about 800 people here Sunday.
The landmark 1973 Supreme Court decision in Roe vs. Wade gave women the right to choose an abortion to terminate a pregnancy. The contested decision has been narrowly upheld by the high court.
Conservatives question McCain’s opposition to a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage, which he opposes but says should be regulated by the states.
Later, at a rally promoting an abstinence program, he told the crowd of more than 1,000 teens and parents that young people today have pressures far different from the ones he faced while growing up.
“Sometimes I’ve made the wrong choice,” McCain said.
