Real veep meets The Onion’s Joe Biden

Share

Let’s be clear: The real Vice President Joe Biden says he doesn’t drink, definitely has never sported a pony tail, didn’t hitchhike his way to the Democratic National Convention, and isn’t serving a lifetime ban from Dave & Busters.

Nor has he ever washed his Trans Am on the White House North Lawn wearing only a pair of jean shorts. And he certainly hasn’t had to cool his heels in Mexico for a while during his four years as vice president, other than for official business.

But there are times when the line between the glad-handing, lady-flirting, aviator-wearing, pec-complimenting, 40-year-in-federal-office-serving Biden and the bawdy caricature of him in the satire e-zine The Onion gets especially thin.

Never more so than Friday, as the real life second-in-command teased his online likeness over their shared love of sports cars.

The occasion was the release of a new e-book by The Onion allegedly written by Biden, entitled “The President of Vice.” Onion Joe was participating in a Reddit AMA, or ask me anything, when Scranton Joe chimed in.

“Q for @reddit AMA with my @TheOnion pal: A Trans-Am? Ever look under the hood of a Corvette? #imavetteguy,” Biden asked on his official Twitter account, which included a photo of the VP checking out a cherry-red “vette.”

The White House has long been familiar with The Onion portrayal of the vice president, and Biden himself has confessed to getting a kick out of it. But it was only on Friday that they interfaced, to the delight of the fans of both Bidens.

When another Reddit user quizzed Onion Joe Biden about the Corvette comment from the real deal, “Diamond Joe Biden,” as he’s going by in the AMA chat, replied: “I might be wigeon’ out a little right now, but I think there’s some impostor out there spreading bad [stuff] about me.”
