City Atty. Rocky Delgadillo announced Thursday he is seeking a court injunction against the Black P Stones street gang, which he said has been terrorizing the Baldwin Village area.

Delgadillo, a candidate for state attorney general, filed papers to obtain what would be Los Angeles’ 27th injunction against a street gang less than a week before the Democratic primary. Delgadillo has emphasized his anti-gang work in his campaign.

“The Black P Stones have terrorized this community for decades, and today we are saying -- together -- that we will not tolerate this any longer,” Delgadillo said at a news conference. “This injunction will give us the tools we need to help the people of Baldwin Village reclaim their community.”

The request for an injunction will be heard July 25 by a Los Angeles County Superior Court judge.

The injunctions identify gang members and prohibit them from loitering in certain neighborhoods. The court orders also allow for stiffer penalties for members who trespass, violate curfew, commit vandalism or violate other laws.

Members of the gang targeted Thursday, which is affiliated with the Bloods, would be prohibited from associating with one another in public in a designated area around Baldwin Village and would be prohibited from possessing weapons, drugs and graffiti tools.

Thursday’s announcement at the Jim Gilliam Recreation Center gave Delgadillo a last-minute, pre-election photo opportunity standing next to popular Los Angeles Police Chief William J. Bratton.

Bratton said he is not endorsing anyone in the attorney general race because he likes both Delgadillo and his opponent in Tuesday’s primary, Oakland Mayor and former California Gov. Jerry Brown.

The use of gang injunctions has been an effective tool in fighting street gangs, Bratton said, noting that 57% of the homicides in Los Angeles last year are believed to be gang-related.

He said the Black P Stones gang is believed to be responsible for several killings.
