L.A. gang member held on suspicion of illegally entering U.S.
A reputed member of a notorious Los Angeles street gang was arrested on suspicion of illegally entering the United States, federal authorities said Monday.
Jose De Jesus Salazar-Gomez, 35, an “active member” of the Florencia 13 street gang, was spotted early Monday by Border Patrol agents after he crossed the border near Calexico, Calif., according to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
He was “arrested without incident before he could reach nearby neighborhoods of downtown Calexico,” authorities said in a statement.
Salazar-Gomez was convicted of felony first-degree burglary and served two years in prison before he was sent back to Mexico, according to federal authorities.
He was being held on suspicion of illegally entering the country after previously being removed.
Florencia 13 is one of Los Angeles’ largest street gangs and operates in the unincorporated Florence-Firestone neighborhood that borders South Los Angeles.
