Water Suppliers Warned to Submit Safety Reports
The Environmental Protection Agency has issued warnings to 18 small drinking water suppliers in California, saying they could be fined for failing to submit plans describing how they would prevent or respond to terrorist attacks.
The cities of Perris and Norco and the Lake Arrowhead Community Service District were among water suppliers that submitted no plans for emergency response or reducing vulnerability to terrorism, which were due in 2004, the agency said. The city of San Jacinto did not provide an emergency response plan, the agency added.
If suppliers without vulnerability plans do not submit them within a month, the companies could face up to $32,000 a day in court-ordered penalties, EPA officials said.
Federal legislation in 2002 ordered all water systems that serve more than 3,300 customers to submit plans.
