A gunman opened fire outside a private party after the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards in West Los Angeles early Sunday, wounding three men and scattering about 200 partygoers across the neighborhood, police said.

The shooting took place about 12:30 a.m. on a commercial strip near Pico and La Cienega boulevards when the gunman, angry that security personnel had denied him entry into the party, fired several rounds from a handgun into the crowd before fleeing, said Los Angeles Police Lt. Roger Deranian.

“It was chaos,” Deranian said. “After shots were fired, people began to panic and run.”

The three victims, one of whom was a passerby on the street, are all believed to be in their 20s. They were taken to hospitals and were all expected to survive, Deranian said.

The party was being thrown by an attendee of Saturday night’s Nickelodeon awards show, which took place at UCLA and was hosted by pop idol Justin Timberlake.

Deranian said the party, which was being held inside an empty storefront that was formerly a drapery business, had no affiliation with Nickelodeon and was also attended by people who were not at the awards show.
