2009 Subaru Forester

Do you think the Subaru Forester should be more "green?"

  • Don't believe everything you read--in response to yesterday's post by What in the?, the '06 Pathfinder 2wd couldn't even get 20/25 mpg rolling downhill--revised govt. fuel economy ratings post it at 14/21 (check fueleconomy.gov). I suppose you'll say "in the real world i get better than that...", but then so do Subie drivers. Not to mention that the Forester XT could blow the doors off the Pathfinder, which weighs more than 1,000 pounds more and has only 46 more horsepower. Typical Limbaugh fan disinformation.

  • I think it's a bit silly to order a turbo model and then complain about the gas mileage. Just get the normally aspirated model if you want the best mileage. Even though we're not in a PZEV state, we special-ordered a PZEV model. For about $200 extra, you actually get 5 *more* horsepower, 20/26 mpg (adjusted EPA numbers, so you should do better), and pollute about 90% less than the non-PZEV model. No non-hybrid AWD competitor does better than 20/26, nor can they offer 175hp.

  • This is the latest fad, disguising an ad for a Subaru Forester (including the Forester price tag) as pro-environmental news, just enough to keep the dimmest Californians happy. Clever but it contributes to ad pollution, a very pervasive cancer of our consumerist society. As far as the Subaru is concerned, it is a lovely car, however it is no more or less polluting than the gimmicky hybrid that has become as popular with the "iPod" crowd yet it does nothing but make the hybrid owners achieve a false pretense of "environmentalism"

  • A bit expensive

  • For that size car and engine the MPG is horrible. My 06 Pathfinder 2wd with 270hp, 3 rows of seats gets 20 city and 25 freeway, in Los Angeles traffic! Limbaugh is #1 on my preset along with John and Ken at 640am.

  • Nice try. That is, nice try being cute about snow and how blue the sky in LA, but guess what? Breathing the air in LA long term shaves time off your life expectancy. That's a fact. Most of the cleanest air in the country is in areas with cold winters. Deal with that. Btw, I've been driving Subi's long before it was considered cool, and I never owned a truck or SUV - not even in those "dreaded" cold states.

  • By the way, GM's share in Subaru (Fuji) is now owned by Toyota, so there is indeed access to hybrid technology, but please, keep the stick shift and do improve the mileage. I am a Forester owner with 170k+ on it and am disappointed after reading Dan's excellent review!

  • I like it, just lacks a 5sp auto. Green to me would be a 6sp auto with a dual clutch for more mileage, please, no CVTs Also the tubo runs on premium not regular.

  • "I don't think a Subaru radio can even pick up Rush Limbaugh's show." WTF? How does this relate to cars? Also, by your logic shouldn't Rush love this gas hog? 19/24 for this size vehicle is really sorry. If you are realy worried about carbon emmisions buying a Subaru is not going to save the earth. Get a bike and avoid the frijoles.

  • Subaru is going to start selling turbodiesel in 2010 in the US. It already does so in the UK.
