MWD Strongly Protects Our Drinking Water

Share

It’s hard to believe the Metropolitan Water District needs defending, but your Aug. 12 editorial, “MWD’s Pricey ‘Image,’ ” failed to recognize the district’s exceptional job protecting our drinking water.

Allow me to cite a few examples. In Moab, Utah, a large uranium slag heap, located next to the Colorado River, is leaching radiation into our drinking water. Who lobbied to get it cleaned up? It was the MWD. The district recently walked the halls of Congress to get responsible parties to clean up the pervasive water-borne rocket-fuel contaminant perchlorate. And the MWD successfully fought the Republican plan to exempt manufacturers of MTBE from liability.

In these instances, the Metropolitan Water District used its considerable lobbying skills to protect the health and safety of Californians.
