Teach the controversy?
1.
I am a student at Iowa State University and I have to say that the "persecution" of proponents of intelligent design mentioned in the film are seriously called into question by the inclusion of the case at my university in the lineup. The professor denied tenure at my university, Dr. Guillermo Gonzalez, brought in less than a tenth of the average grant money than his colleagues, and had virtually no articles published in peer-reviewed journals during his time at Iowa State. There are very clear criteria for being awarded tenure, and he did not meet them. His case was reviewed and duly dismissed by the college.
2. If you have done little or no reading on this issue then your viewpoint is one from ignorance. Google "Intelligent Design" and spend an hour finding answers on your own. If you wish to discuss this issue further come over to the 'Evolution and Origins' forum at http://www.talkrational.org/
3. As for the quote by Hitler: Anyone who thinks that Hitler was not deluded when he called himself a Christian hasn't read his Bible. While Jesus did throw the money changers out of the temple, that is a far cry from the violence that Hitler committed against the Jews. Besides, all the men and women in Jesus' inner circle were Jews. Therefore, race had nothing to do with this "fight", the only "fight" Jesus was ever engaged in. Anyone can SAY they're a Christian, but that doesn't make it so.
4. There seems to be quite a bit of confusion regarding how/where science and faith intersect. If someone is a Christian and reads about Noah's ark (faith), he/she can ask a question such as ,"If there really was a world-wide flood, what would the evidence be?" What if the answer is, "millions of dead things, buried in rock layers, all over the earth"? Then, one can scientifically examine the rock layers in the earth to see if there are millions of dead things buried there. I don't get what is so complicated about recognizing where science and faith cross paths. One is not necessarily mutually exclusive of the other.
5. Intelligent Design is too shallow, and conveys nothing of much value, other than "life is too complex to have developed on it's own". Does it explain the fossil record? Does it tell us why prehistoric mankind lived and disappeared from upon the Earth? Does it resolve the differences between what science has discovered and what unskilled people have perceived to be written in Genesis? Instead of wasting time with “ID”, and only teaching the insanity of evolution, we should be seeking the correct literal interpretation of Genesis, and climb out of this “abyss” of ignorance. ephraim7@aol.com
6. It should be obvious to anyone who checks on its etiology that "Intelligent Design" is an essentially political program concocted by the loony Right for the usual reason: theocracy is the most efficient disguise for authoritarianism. The leading "scientifc" spokesmen for ID, Dembski and Behe, have repeatedly demonstrated an incompetence that belies their fancy degrees (though nobody has suggested that Dembski forfeit tenure at Lehigh on that account). Lots of peoplle are terrified at the finitude of human existence and its cosmic insignificance. So they cling pathetically to the myths of some primitive shepherds.
7. There is no data to support the search for extra terrestrial intlligence (SETI); only the faith to believe that benevolent, higher forms of life must exist somewhere and will welcome us when we make contact. There is no data to support the 'theory' that the Earth was 'seeded' with organisms which originated elsewhere, yet this is taught in our high school and college classrooms. Science is not only data, it is thought experiments such as Einstein used to describe quantum physics. Why not thought experiments that include God?
8. That this controversy is still going on shows the incredible incompetence of the science community. It should have been ended long ago. See discussion of how in the chapter Does the word God exist? in the book Our Almost Impossible Universe: Why the laws of nature make the existence of humans extraordinarily unlikely and the blog randomabsurdities.wordpress.com
9. High School teacher...I really doubt you have ever read Darwin's Book... and I doubt you really understand evolution theory... Biology is a hard science, like physics or chemistry...Evolution is astrology...just because many people believe...does not make it real...
10. I'm a high school teacher. Put Intelligent Design in the Philosophy classroom, but keep it out of the Science classroom until, as has been stated repeatedly, there is data to back it up.
