Police arrested a man who was allegedly drunk and calmly holding a knife at a Newport Beach Jack in the Box on Wednesday afternoon.

About 2:20 p.m., officers responded to a call that a drunk man had brandished a knife in a fast-food restaurant in the 4600 block of W. Coast Hwy., according to Newport Beach Police Department spokeswoman Jennifer Manzella.

Officers allegedly found the man, identified as Robert Borkland, 44, of Costa Mesa, sitting outside a nearby business with the folding knife in his back pocket.

“He was extremely intoxicated,” Manzella said.

A witness told police the man wasn’t acting aggressively with the knife. He was simply holding it open at his side and left when the fast-food workers asked him to, according to the NBPD.

“The witness said he never used the knife in a rude, angry or threatening manner, nor did he make any comments [while] displaying the knife,” Manzella said.

Officers arrested the man on suspicion of public drunkenness.
