Crescenta Valley Briefs: YMCA’s annual prayer breakfast; Performance at La Crescenta Library

The YMCA Foothills will host its annual prayer breakfast at 7 a.m. Thursday at the Crescenta-Cañada Family Y location, 1930 Foothill Blvd., La Cañada Flintridge.

Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the door.

The breakfast keynote speaker will be Sarah Drew, best known for her role as April Kepner in “Grey’s Anatomy.” Chris Erskine, humor columnist and editor at the Los Angeles Times, has been tapped as the event’s emcee.

Patrick D’Arcy will perform the Uillean pipes at 6 p.m. Thursday at La Crescenta Library, 2809 Foothill Blvd., La Crescenta.

D’Arcy’s performance of his native Ireland’s national bagpipe is part of the library’s “Season of Discovery” series, which runs through next year, spotlighting a range of musical talent.

Voting for the Crescenta Valley Town Council will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday in the community room at La Crescenta Library, 2809 Foothill Blvd.

Voters must live in unincorporated La Crescenta or Montrose.

This year, residents are voting to fill six seats. There are six candidates: Charles Beatty, Mariam Barnes, Leslie Dickson, Lisa Griffin, Desiree Rabinov and Kevin Kang.

Votes will determine which candidates will fill three three-year terms and three one-year terms.

Volunteers are needed for the monthly cleanup along the Foothill (210) Freeway from 8:30 to 9:15 a.m. Saturday.

The cleanup will take place at the offramp where La Crescenta and Altura avenues intersect. Helpers must be at least 18 years old and are asked to wear long pants and closed-toe shoes. Equipment for gardening and pruning will be available, although clippers are welcomed.

A dedication ceremony for Crescenta Commons, located at the corner of Rosemont and Orange avenues, will be held at 9 a.m. on Saturday.

The ceremony will include comments from Los Angeles County Supervisor Michael Antonovich as well as the lowering of a scroll time capsule inside a sundial monument.

American Legion Post 288 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1614 will host a Veterans Day celebration from noon to 3 p.m. Tuesday at the war memorial in Two Strike Park, 5107 Rosemont Ave., La Crescenta.

The ceremony and vigil will honor veterans and active military personnel with assistance from Crescenta Valley High School’s JROTC and Boy Scout Troop 288.
