Brown signs Liu’s foster-care bill

Among the items considered by Gov. Jerry Brown this week — as he worked to meet a Sept. 30 deadline to take action on legislation — was a bill by state Sen. Carol Liu (D-La Cañada Flintridge), which he signed on Monday.

Senate Bill 1023 was the eighth and final bill Liu had put forth this year, all of them receiving the blessing of the governor. This latest bill will allow up to 10 community college districts in the state to provide extra support for foster children who are pursuing a postsecondary degree.

“I thank the Governor for recognizing that young adults from the foster care system often need extra help when they attend community college,” stated Liu in a news release. “Tutoring, mentoring and other assistance will help these youth complete associate degrees, gain valuable career skills, and transfer to four-year colleges and universities.”

Liu, chairman of the Senate Education Committee, represents about 930,000 people in the 25th Senate District.
