USS Pasadena crew visit to include stops at JPL, Tournament House

Forty crew members of the USS Pasadena, a nuclear-powered submarine, will visit the city it is named for from Friday, Sept. 5 through Sunday, Sept. 7, including a tour of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and a visit to the Rose Bowl.

Crew members and spouses will stay with local families during a trip sponsored by the USS Pasadena Foundation, the volunteer group that provides support to the crew and aims to uphold the bond between the ship and its namesake city.

The USS Pasadena (SSN 752) – a Los Angeles Class attack submarine whose weapons systems include torpedoes, cruise missiles and mines -- is the third ship to be named for the city of Pasadena, according to a statement from the foundation. It was launched in September 1987 and commissioned into service in 1989.

The crew consists of 12 officers and 115 enlisted personal, based at the ship’s home port in San Diego.

The 40 crew members who will be visiting will take a special tour of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in La Cañada Flintridge on Friday afternoon, followed by an evening reception at the Tournament of Roses Assn. headquarters, with dinner catered by In-N-Out Burger – a favorite of the crew when they return from deployments at sea.

On Saturday morning, the crew will tour the Rose Bowl stadium to witness preprations for the UCLA vs Memphis State University football game, and visit the Rose Palace to see some of the floats under construction for the 2015 annual Tournament of Roses parade.

After attending the football game as guests of UCLA Saturday evening, the crew will return to San Diego Sunday morning.
