KANSAS CITY, MO.—Big changes are coming for drivers on I-70 near the Truman Sports Complex as the George Brett Bridge at Blue Ridge Cut-Off is set to come tumbling down at midnight for reconstruction.
Crews will be bringing the bridge down around midnight, which will mean that I-70 will be closed until 1:30 a.m. Drivers are urged to use U.S. 40 for the next several weeks as crews build a new overpass across I-70 to the Sports Complex, as the construction could mean numerous delays for traffic in both directions.
The use of 40 Highway as an alternate route is good news to at least one area business.
"I think it's going to help us a little bit more because of way traffic is being rerouted this time, it's cause us to have little more traffic in front of our store," said James Murphy, manager of Sports Nutz. Murphy says that this is the quiet time of the year for his store, with the Chiefs out of the playoffs and opening day for the Royals still two-and-a-half months away.
"(It will) help have extra traffic going in front of store, maybe we'll get a few cars that'll stop that doesn't stop," said Murphy, who says that he considers it a bit of a payback for previous construction on 40 Highway that routed traffic away from his store.
The project has a hard deadline for completion of March 30th, or one day before the Royals home opener on March 31.
