KANSAS CITY, KAN—Kansas state Sen. Chris Steineger has quit the Democratic Party and become a Republican, saying he can do more for his constituents as a member of the chamber's majority.
Friday's move by the Kansas City lawmaker gives the GOP a 32-8 edge in the Senate, where Steineger has served since 1997.
A majority of Wyandotte County voters are registered as Democrats.
But Steineger has long had a strained relationship with Senate Minority Leader Anthony Hensley. Steineger said in a written statement that his views on political issues have evolved, making him more in line with the GOP.
Kansas Democratic Party Chairman Larry Gates issued a statement wishing Steineger well and agreeing that his identification as a Republican is "a better fit for his personal beliefs."
