An abandoned horse found in Amherst County is up for sale after being handed over to the Amherst County Sheriff’s Office.
The horse was taken in on February 5, and the case was heard in Amherst General District Court on Tuesday. The court decided that the horse was abandoned, so it was turned over to the sheriff’s office.
It is a 7 to 12-year-old chestnut stallion with a white blaze, weighing about 900 pounds. Since he was found he has been living with a local large animal veterinarian.
The sheriff’s office is now offering the horse for sale to a good home. Sealed bids with a reserve of $500 will be accepted by the Sheriff’s Office through Monday, March 11 at 4 p.m.
Proceeds of the sale will offset the housing and veterinary care provided so far.
The top bidder will be asked to meet with Animal Care & Control to ensure they will be able to properly care for the horse before the final sale.
Bids can be delivered in person at the sheriff’s office located at 115 Taylor Street, or you can mail your bid to:
