He had been with Department of Social Services for more than three-decades..
So, when Bill Wilcher stepped down as Craig County's director earlier this month, it set tongues wagging.
Now, Regional Director Susan Reese is trying to put rumors to rest.
Reese says Wilcher retired at the beginning of the month- and since the small department didn't have a deputy director, the state moved in to help during the transition.
"There are no improprieties. It's not unusual for an audit to take place of certain funds like Title 4e funding or Comprehensive Services Act funding - that's not unusual," explains Susan Reese, Regional Director Virginia Department of Social Services.
When asked if those funds had been misused, Reese replied, "No, they've not been misused."
She says the department continues to serve its clients.
When reached by telephone Wilcher told News7 - he chose to retired and it was "time to go."
A new director is expected to be in place in the next two to three months.
