One Montgomery County resident is still serving her community at 91 years old.

Nannie Hairston, a civil rights activist, has been giving back in the New River Valley since moving there in 1953.

Earlier in the week, Hairston was honored as one of the Strong Men and Women in Virginia History.

The honor is given to someone who makes a difference in their community,

Today, a birthday celebration was held in Christiansburg to celebrate her accomplishments.

"I'm just grateful that my husband and I have done something in this county that I feel a lot of young people and middle aged people will carry on, and thank you," Hairston said.

The Dominion Foundation donates five thousand dollars to a nonprofit designated by the Strong Men and Women honorees.

Hairston's gift will go to the New River Community College in Dublin to create a scholarship in her husband's name
