Virginia State Police are looking into an officer-involved shooting that led to a man's death.
It happened in Dickenson County, about 200 miles west of Roanoke, near the Kentucky border.
A sheriff's deputy was responding to a call about an assault at a home in the Caney Ridge section of Dickenson County when he confronted the suspect.
That man, Gary Dean Carty, 60, of Clintwood apparently pulled out a knife and charged at the deputy before being shot.
He died Tuesday morning at Bristol Regional Medical Center.
The sheriff's deputy wasn't hurt in the attempted attack.
The investigation is ongoing at this time.
