Forest landowners in 15 Virginia counties can apply for state funding to create habitat for bobwhite quail.
Bobwhite prefer sunny, open areas. The program promotes the planting of shortleaf pine trees while thinning stands of other tree types to allow more sunlight to reach the ground.
The program is a partnership between the Virginia Departments of Forestry and Game and Inland Fisheries.
The program is designed for private landowners in the counties of Augusta, Bland, Culpeper, Essex, Greene, Greensville, Halifax, King and Queen, King William, Madison, Orange, Rappahannock, Southampton, Sussex and Wythe.
