College students took a break from studying and starting digging today in Danville.
It's known as the Day to Engage where students from Averett University, Danville Community College and Piedmont Community College help spruce up the community.
Thursday morning education students helped a low income housing agency plant a garden and spread dirt for a flower bed.
There's no class credit, just experience working with people outside their classrooms with the Danville Regional Foundation.
"We have a program called Engage Dan River Region which is a service learning program on the college campuses and we were trying to think of a creative way to really kick off that program because we launched it last fall. So we came up with a Day to Engage and it was a huge success last semester so we decided to do one each semester," said Rachel Covington from the Danville Regional Foundation.
Hundreds of college students spent the entire day volunteering in Danville and Pittsylvania County and in neighboring Caswell County, North Carolina.
