The Virginia Department of Transportation will suspend lane closures on interstates and roads across the state for the Thanksgiving holiday.

The lane closures will be lifted from noon Wednesday until noon Monday.

Construction zones with concrete barriers and orange barrels will remain in place, according to VDOT.

Here is a list of the projects in VDOT's 12-county Salem Transportation District.

INTERSTATE 81

INTERSTATE 81 SHOULDER PAVING - Crews will pave the right shoulder of a section of I-81 southbound between mile markers 154 to 156. Lane closures will be in place while work is being performed Sunday through Thursday between 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. and possible daytime lane closures between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. Estimated completion is December.

INTERSTATE 81 LANE CLOSURES AND DETOURS – Repair work on the Route 614 (Arcadia Road) bridge over I-81 will require nighttime northbound and southbound lane closures. The work is located near the exit 168 interchange in Botetourt County. The lane closures will be in place from 10 p.m. until 6 a.m. Sunday through Thursday. The northbound and southbound right shoulders under the bridge will remain closed throughout the project. This project will continue through June 2013.

###     * INTERSTATE 81 GUARDRAIL REPAIR – On Sunday, Nov. 18, lane closures will be in place on southbound I-81 between mile markers 90 - 91,105 - 106 and 137 - 138 and northbound between 127 - 128 from 10 p.m. until 6 a.m. for guardrail repairs. Additionally, lane closures will be in place for repairs during daylight hours on Monday, Nov. 19 between mile markers 114 and 115 and Tuesday, Nov. 20, at mile marker 109 and between mile markers 162 and 163.

INTERSTATE 81 MOWING – Crews will mow portions of northbound and southbound I-81 between mile markers 105 and 130 in Montgomery County and mile markers 87 and 104 in Pulaski County Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.

ROANOKE

* RIVERLAND ROAD INTERSECTION IMPROVEMENTS – Work to improve the intersection of Riverland Road, Mount Pleasant Boulevard and Bennington Street in Roanoke is under way.  Work will include construction of a roundabout, turn lanes and drainage improvements.  Periodic lane closures may occur between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. on weekdays. Nighttime lane closures may be in place on Mount Pleasant Boulevard and Bennington Street from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. for installation of a pipe. Traffic on Riverland Road is being detoured onto a newly paved section of roadway until sometime next year. As part of this change, traffic is routed into a new pattern requiring a three-way stop at the intersection of Riverland Road, Mount Pleasant Boulevard and Bennington Street. Drivers should be alert to this traffic pattern change and use caution. In addition, a temporary traffic signal has been installed at the entrance to Roanoke City’s Fire Station #11 on Mount Pleasant Boulevard.  This signal will only be activated when emergency response vehicles need to respond and access Riverland Road.  This project will continue until July 2013.

UTILITY LINE INSTALLATION (VARIOUS LOCATIONS) – Utility installation will take place, weather permitting, along various routes. Motorists should watch for temporary shoulder and lane closures. Work is scheduled for Route 11 (Williamson Road) between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. between Route 839 (Malvern Road NW) and Route 1844 (Abney Road NW).

ROANOKE COUNTY

* ROUTE 11/460 (WEST MAIN STREET) WIDENING – Work to widen a section of Route 11/460 to four lanes is underway in the Glenvar area. Periodic lane closures may occur at various locations throughout the project while work is being performed. The speed limit is reduced to 35 mph. Work to replace the bridge over Little Bear Rock Branch may cause shifts in traffic patterns on Route 11/460 near its intersection with Fort Lewis Church Road. Barrier wall is installed on the bridge and both travel lanes are narrowed. A new traffic pattern is in place at the entrance to Richfield Retirement Community. Drivers should be alert to stopped vehicles turning in this area.   Temporary traffic signals are installed at Daugherty Road.  Motorists should expect changing traffic patterns, use caution and expect delays in the work zone. Contractor will be working Monday through Saturday. This project will continue until fall of 2013.

###     * ROUTE 221 WIDENING – Work to widen a section of Route 221 in the Back Creek area is under way. Work may require lane closures between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. at various locations throughout the project.  Flaggers will control traffic at times. The speed limit has been reduced to 35 mph. A new traffic pattern is in place at the intersection of Ran Lynn Road and Cotton Hill Road. Drivers should be alert to changing traffic patterns in this work zone.  Crews will be placing bridge beams between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 20. Motorists should expect delays as flaggers stop traffic to off load the beams. Motorists should expect delays. This project will continue until fall of 2013.

###     * ROUTE 460 PAVING – Lane closures will be in place on a section of Route 460 westbound from west of Route 220 Alternate to east of the City of Roanoke for paving operations. Work will be performed between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday Friday. Estimated completion is November 21.

###     ROUTE 419 PAVING – Night time lane closures will be in place on the left lane of Route 419 northbound from Route 221 (Brambleton Avenue) to the City of Salem for paving. The work will take place from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. Sunday through Thursday.

###     ROUTE 613 PAVING – Route 613 (Merriman Road) will be reduced to one lane for paving on November 19 and 20. The work will take place between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. each day. Work will also be performed on November 21 from 9 a.m. until noon if needed.

* ROUTE 635 BRIDGE REPAIRS- Work to repair the I-81 bridges over Route 635 (Goodwin Avenue) is underway.  Motorist should expect periodic lane closures between Carrollton Avenue and Route 619 (Wildwood Road) between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. on weekdays. Estimated completion is December.

* ROUTE 1836 BRIDGE REPAIRS- Work to repair the I-81 bridges over Route 1836 (Belle Haven Road) is underway.  Motorist should expect periodic lane closures between Route 1894 (Loch Haven Road) and Route 1878 (Martindale Avenue) between 7 a.m. and 5 .m. on weekdays. Estimated completion is December.
