Firefighters' Union Reps and firefighters themselves gathered at Engine Company 205 at 74 Middagh Street in Park Slope and marched across the Brooklyn Bridge.
They met up with citizens outraged over the proposed cuts, encouraging the public to call the city's 311 complaint line to make their protests heard.
Mayor Bloomber has proposed cutting 20 firehouses throughout the five boroughs, including 8 in Brooklyn alone. The City says the decision to cut certain firehouses was based on workload, the proximity to other fire houses, and response time.
Brooklyn is the borough with the current fastest response time in the city. With the proposals, however, in Park Slope, the cuts are estimated to create an additional 30 seconds to response time, while that number is up to 52 seconds in Brooklyn Heights.
Former Little Italy firefighter and current Park Slope celebrity resident Steve Buscemi - known for his role in Reservoir Dogs and now starring in HBO's "Boardwalk Empire" - spoke out against the proposed cuts, ecohing many New Yorkers' concerns.
"Firehouses are symbols of safety in our neighborhoods. Closing them is no way to protect New York," he said.
