GREENPOINT, NY (PIX11) -- Don't pour the beer just yet in Greenpoint. A controversy is brewing concerning the Polish Slavic Culture Center, application for a liquor license, to serve beer and wine in their cafeteria.
"So far there are 92 signatures against it, and we have 42 thousand people who say go ahead serve me a beer, " said Community Board One's Public Safety Chair, Miesko Kalita.
The C.E.O. of the Polish Slavic Culture Center, Bozena Kaminski told PIX 11 News, "Our members have spoken. They want a drink with their polish delicacies," said Kaminski.
If approved, Kaminski says she will serve beer and wine only Monday thru Saturday from 10-7pm, and not Sundays.
According to the Health Department, Greenpoint has the highest binge-drinking rates in Brooklyn. While some are worried serving alcohol in the culture center sends the wrong message Kaminski said, "I don't think this sens the wrong message, we will serve responsibly."
