WESTBURY, N.Y. (WPIX)—An off-duty NYPD officer was killed Thursday after the vehicle he was traveling in jumped a curb and smashed a tree, officials said.
According to authorities, the officer along with another individual were traveling in the 1994 Honda along Carmen Avenue in Westbury at around 2 a.m. when it veered off the road. Upon impact, the officer - who was not identified - became trapped inside the twisted steel while the other man was ejected from the car.
The NYPD cop was transported to Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow where he was pronounced dead. The second man was also taken to the hospital where he is being treated for serious head injuries. His condition wasn't immediately clear.
"The vehicle hit a tree head on, wrapping around it and breaking apart," Nassau County Det. Lt. Kevin Smith told the New York Post. Speed appears to be a factor in the accident, he said.
It wasn't clear which man was behind the wheel at the time of the crash.
Police are still investigating the incident.
