TOTTENVILLE, N.Y. (WPIX)—An 18-month-old boy from Staten Island was hospitalized Saturday, after he nearly drowned in a backyard swimming pool.
Rescue workers say boy, Vincent Fougere, somehow ended up underwater in the pool behind his house on Brehaut Avenue in Tottenville. When rescue workers responded to the scene, he was not breathing and had no pulse.
Firefighters had been outside the firehouse on Amboy Road when a man ran up the block, screaming for help. Within seconds, firefighters responded to home where they found the boy lying on the patio, wearing only his diaper.
Fougere was transported to Staten Island University Hospital South in Ocean Breeze in critical condition. After several minutes of CPR, he eventually regained a pulse at the hospital.
It's still unclear how long the boy had been submerged, but one neighbor speculated that he was underwater between 30 seconds and a minute.
The boy's long-term prognosis is still unclear.
