NEW FAIRFIELD, Conn. (WPIX)—A teenager died in a freak accident after a large tree fell on her during an end-of-school-year party at her Connecticut home, PIX News has learned.
Authorities say 13-year-old Catherine Burke was hosting a party at her Smoke Hill Drive residence on the Danbury-New Fairfield town line Wednesday afternoon when a dead 50-foot tree fell over and landed on her. The seventh grade student was transported to Danbury Hospital where she was pronounced dead, police said.
Another girl at the party was also taken to the hospital, and was treated for a broken leg. She is said to be in good condition Thursday.
Neighbors say the victim's parents, Joseph and Sarah Burke, hold the end-of-school-year party for their daughter and her friends every year.
About a dozen girls were at the party and were too traumatized to speak to the Danbury Youth Bureau detectives who are investigating the incident.
Connecticut State Police Lieutenant Paul Vanze said the accident appears to be just that, an accident.
"There was no criminal aspect whatsoever," Vanze told PIX News.
No other serious injuries were reported.
