George Zimmerman did not waste his first opportunity on the witness stand…and used it today – during his bail hearing, to speak directly to Trayvon Martin's parents.

"I wanted to say i am sorry for the loss of your son. I did not know how old he was, i thought he was a little bit younger than i am and i did not know if he was armed", Zimmerman said from the stand.

Defense attorney Mark O'Mara says Zimmerman was essentially responding to Trayvon's mother, who had previously stated she wanted and apology and an explanation.

"I think it should have happened in a private setting and that we tried and that wasn't afforded to us so that's the way it worked", said O'Mara.

Lawyers for the Martins say the family doesn't believe Zimmerman's apology was genuine.

"There was no evidence offered. If he's going to address the family, then he should've addressed it all. Tell the family what happened, not one of the five stories that he's purported to have told the police. This was the most disingenuous, insincere thing that I have ever seen", said Martin family attorney Natalie Jackson.

In the end, Zimmerman's comments were not as critical to the hearing as Judge Ken Lester's decision.

He set bail at 150-thousand dollars.

He's happy that we have a bond amount. He's happy that he was not denied bail. Now we just need to figure out how to keep him secure and safe", O'Mara.

That bail comes with several stipulations. Zimmerman must submit to a night curfew, GPS tracking, and agree to no additional contact with Trayvon martin`s family. And let's not forget Zimmerman's family is still working to actually secure the bond. It will be at least a few days before he's released
