ELKHART -- They died together in a bike accident June 7, the best of buddies, so close that one of them wrote a poem.
"We are complete the opposites," 18-year-old David Anglemyer of Goshen wrote. "So you'd think we would argue all the times, ... In the reality, we are as close as brothers, buds till the end."
On Sunday, there will be a benefit to help the grieving families. Katie Runion said she has yet to pay the $10,500 bill for the funeral and burial of her son, Daniel Runion, 19, of Osceola. Proceeds also will offer support to David's family.
The benefit will be from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Hansen's Holiday Skating Rink, 28736 County Road 20, Elkhart. The $5 admission covers skate rental and food. Raffle tickets will be sold.
Donations also can be made to the "Daniel and Davids Memorial Fund" at any PNC Bank and at http://go.to/funding.
Runion said her son, the youngest of four kids, often had medical issues from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder to hearing loss, and that "made us very, very close; he didn't have a lot of close friends."
Those lines from David's poem, titled "Friends With A Puddle," are just an excerpt. The full poem won a poetry contest and was read at both boys' funerals. Read it at http://poetrywonderland.posterous.com.
The boys died while they were riding their bikes on County Road 20 under the St. Joseph Valley Parkway at about 6 a.m.
The car that crossed the center line and struck them was driven by Daniel Snead, 42, of Goshen. He's in jail, charged with two counts of causing another person's death while operating a vehicle under the influence of a controlled substance, a Class B felony, the Elkhart Truth has reported.
