An arrest has been made in connection with a man who had his ear ripped almost completely off during a beating in Michigan City.
At least two others were involved in the attack but no additional arrests have been made.
Kevin Smith, 39, of Michigan City was arrested Thursday on a warrant charging him with Class B felony battery, according to LaPorte County police. He was booked into the LaPorte County Jail and held on $25,000 bond pending his initial court hearing.
Michigan City Police Detective Tim Baker said the 37-year-old victim had his left ear reattached and is facing additional reconstructive surgeries.
The victim also sustained facial fractures and other injuries.
"He definitely took a beating. That’s for sure,’’ said Baker.
On April 19, police were called to Wabash Street and Barker Avenue. Apparently, Baker said there were difficulties between one of the suspects and the victim, and through a third party they agreed to meet each other there to discuss things.
It appears the victim was set up, said Baker, because when he arrived he was jumped by several individuals.
Baker said no knives or any other weapons apparently were involved. So far, he said the investigation shows that one of the attackers pulled the victim’s ear hard enough to rip nearly all of it away from the skin.
"It was kind of dangling,’’ said Baker, who added ‘’it was surgically repaired and put back on.’’
According to police, the victim identified Smith as one of the attackers, but did not know the other men involved in the assault.
