Haskins will begin teaching the D.A.R.E. program this fall at Triton Elementary School, a Bourbon Police Department news release stated.
Collins, 49, died in February.
He was Bourbon’s assistant police chief, D.A.R.E. officer at Triton Elementary and a substitute school bus driver for Triton Community Schools. Collins also served on the Bourbon Town Council.
D.A.R.E. is a police officer-led series of classroom lessons that teaches children from kindergarten through 12th grade how to resist peer pressure and live productive drug and violence-free lives.
D.A.R.E. was founded in 1983 in Los Angeles and is now implemented in 75 percent of U.S. school districts and in more than 43 countries around the world, according to the organization’s website.
