48 year old Roy Wayne Sheperd is charged with murder, accused of brutally beating fellow resident 53 year old William Brown.
It happened Saturday at Roland's Retirement Club in Speedway.
For 20 minutes, neighbors say Sheperd pummeled Brown, ultimately leading to his death.
"I heard just the pounding on the wall and then Roy talking to him about shutting his mouth. I couldn't get out of bed, I'm not suppose to be walking, I just hit for the nurse to come down," said Robert Gordon, a neighbor.
Brown's injuries included several skull and facial fractures, broken bones and serious brain damage. He was still able to tell investigators what happened, before being transported to Methodist Hospital and dying from his injuries.
"It is rare that you would have somebody that would have that type of injury and be able to talk coherently to investigators and officers and then later take such a turn to where it is death," Theobald said.
Investigators believe the dispute between Sheperd and Brown stemmed from alcohol.
The two men involved in the altercation had a history of disagreements, arguments and prior physical altercations.
Sheperd is behind held in seclusion at Marion County's Jail's medical unit. Brown was pronounced dead at Methodist Hospital two days after the attack.
Police say Sheperd was arrested for battery in 2003.
