2 Hurt in Shooting That Closes I-10 Lanes

A shooting on the San Bernardino Freeway near Fontana early Monday morning left two Rialto men hospitalized and led to the closure of all westbound lanes for several hours during the morning rush hour, authorities said.

A black Ford Taurus approached the victims’ car on Interstate 10 near Sierra Avenue about 2:40 a.m., and shots were fired, hitting the driver in the jaw and the passenger in the buttocks, said San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman Jodi Miller.

Authorities said they believed the shooting followed a fight involving the two victims and two men at Cafe Sevilla restaurant in Riverside. The victims’ names were not released.

The wounded driver drove his bullet-riddled car to a gas station in the 1600 block of Valley Boulevard in Fontana.

“They were able to exit the freeway quickly, and medical aid responded,” Miller said. “The injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.”

Westbound traffic was stopped from 3 to 7 a.m. at Sierra Avenue, where cars were redirected to other freeways. “It was pretty severe and inconvenient,” California Highway Patrol spokesman Tony Nguyen said.

The closure was required because investigators were searching for bullet casings, he said.
