A woman was shot in the leg early Friday during a confrontation with Los Angeles police officers inside a Hollywood & Highland parking structure, officials said.

Police responding to a 1:24 a.m. call concerning an assault with a deadly weapon encountered the woman inside the subterranean parking structure of the shopping center, LAPD Lt. Michael Ling said.

The woman, later identified as 47-year-old Diamond Vargas, confronted officers and was shot once in the leg inside the structure in the 6800 block of Hollywood Boulevard, he said.

Vargas was transported to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where she was listed in stable condition and is expected to survive, Ling said.

LAPD Cmdr. Dennis Kato told KTLA that when officers arrived on the scene, they found the woman was smashing a scooter with a baseball bat during a dispute with another woman. At some point, she pulled out a handgun from her pocket, pointed it at a security guard, then at officers, he said.

Vargas was later booked for assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer, said Cmdr. Andrew Smith.

Meanwhile, police are investigating the officer-involved shooting, which is customary for such incidents. An LAPD investigator was at the scene Friday morning searching the area and looking for witnesses and surveillance video, Ling said.
