The last time I saw Fountains of Wayne was opening for the Smashing Pumpkins at the New Haven Coliseum in January of 1997. They were pretty great. Since then, the coliseum has been torn down and Billy Corgan has disbanded the Pumpkins and reformed them with a bunch of kids making up the rest of the band. But Fountains of Wayne have somehow become more cool. Instead of touring as a '90s nostalgia act as so many others from that era do, they have kept very busy writing great songs, landing sweet TV and movie placements and gaining the respect of music nerds everywhere. See them Thursday night at StageOne, a far more intimate venue than the New Haven Coliseum.
