Based on a Frank Wedekind play from the 19th century, Spring Awakening, featuring music and lyrics by rocker Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater, won eight Tony awards (including best musical and best score) and four drama desk awards. Backed by a rock score for band and string trio, the show revolves around a group of late 19th-century German students doing what kids their age have always done well: rebel. (Other themes — sexual abuse, abortion, suicide, homosexuality — certainly will connect with contemporary audiences as well.)

Spring Awakening, April 12-18, $13-$35, Harriet S. Jorgensen Theatre, 802 Bolton Rd., Unit 1127, Storrs, (860) 486-4226, crt.uconn.edu.
