Letters: Back to the ‘first lady of Troy’?
Re “In USC politics, where are the women?,” Feb. 16
The article about the lack of women in high positions of student government at USC brought back memories. I became USC’s student body vice president in 1950 as a result of the nearly unheard-of election of a non-sorority woman.
Women in that era were barred from serving as president. Each student body vice president was, in turn, dubbed the “first lady of Troy” because men could not serve in that position.
If it was also an indication that the office was intended to be largely ceremonial, I, for one, failed to get that memo.
In any event, the article reminded me that, despite what appears to be change (that is, progress) for women, the outcome all too often remains the same.
