Letters: Licenses for the undocumented

Share

Re “A driver’s license milestone,” Oct. 4

State officials estimated the cost of processing this “driving privilege” for undocumented immigrants at $140 million to $220 million in the first three years. The undocumented applicants would collectively pay $50 million under current fee structures.

Why should California taxpayers pay the difference? Why not structure the fee charged to get a “driving privilege” large enough to cover the costs?

It seems as if Gov. Jerry Brown did not bother to consult with his New Mexico counterpart, Susana Martinez, who has advocated repealing her state’s law on licenses for the undocumented. He also could have spoken with New Mexico’s secretary for taxation and revenues, Demesia Padilla, who called the law a “disaster” and said, “We have had a lot of identity fraud.”
