When will planners ever learn? Trolleys belong on Main Street in Disneyland, not in downtown L.A.

Surface rail transit is extremely expensive, inflexible, kills people and gets in the way of other traffic. That is why most trolley lines disappeared by the mid 20th century. One of the few things that the MTA has gotten right is its natural-gas-burning clean-air buses. They require the least taxpayer subsidies, and lines can be added or moved at low cost.

If you really want to spend the taxpayers’ money right, the solution is to hang the trolleys from their wires. A true 21st century transit system would be a cost-effective overhead monorail system, as was proposed for L.A. in the 1950s and ‘60s and has been part of Disneyland since then.

But that idea is still just over their heads.
