For cartoonists, the most commonly asked question is: “Where do you get your ideas?” To which I usually answer, “If you have trouble coming up with ideas, don’t become a cartoonist.” This is doubly true for me. California is such a target-rich environment that I struggle to choose which of the dozens of ideas I have each week to do. I could easily draw a cartoon every day rather than just one a week. 2013 was one of those all-over-the place years: lots going on, no unified theme that ties it all together. Let’s take a look back. -- Ted Rall

Porn industry in crisis

When a news story offers the possibility for a sight gag, I tend to jump on it. Measure B, which has driven the porn industry out of L.A. by requiring that actors wear condoms, is an example. It’s all about the guy wearing nothing but socks.

Cracking down on fitness buffs in Santa Monica

Santa Monica contributed to Californians’ denial of the fact that they live in a populous, densely populated place. It ain’t the Old West anymore. We’re fighting over every square inch of space, just like back East. In Santa Monica’s parks, yogis and dog owners are having at it. (Again, love the visuals.)

The chaotic Dorner manhunt

In a surreal place at a surreal time, the frenzied Christopher Dorner manhunt, shootings of innocent people and the fight over the reward money made my head spin.

If God wanted revenge on cheap politicians

In the end, the weirdest story was a relatively minor one: Sacramento has dropped the ball on earthquake preparedness. Because, you know, what are the odds of us regretting that budget cut?
