Failed crops dominate parts of the landscape in eastern Kenya. The planet will face major agricultural challenges in coming decades, and though international research projects are underway to help meet them, solutions aren't likely to be found quickly, if at all. "The easy things have been done," said Nina V. Fedoroff, a biotechnology expert at Pennsylvania State University. "The problems that are left are hard."
