Readers React: California’s diversity is an asset

To the editor: One reason California has fewer racial tensions than other states may be because it has four major ethnic groups. Any time a society has just two groups — blacks and white, Democrats and Republicans, men and women, to mention a few — that society will have an “us vs. them” mentality and the potential for tension that, in worst cases, escalates into violence. (“Race relations in California better than elsewhere in U.S., voters say,” April 13)

Men and women, who need each other to exist, have learned not only to mitigate this tension but also to develop true and lasting friendships. I believe this will happen among people of different ethnicities.

But Democrats and Republicans? Don’t bet the ranch on that one.
