To the editor: State Sen. Ricardo Lara (D-Bell Gardens) — author of a bill passed by the Senate that would provide healthcare coverage to immigrants who live in California illegally — talks about covering people "who are denied basic healthcare." ("State Senate OKs health coverage for many immigrants here illegally," June 2)
One cannot be denied something to which one is not entitled. The only people who are entitled to a benefit paid for by citizens are other citizens.
We may choose to provide certain benefits to those who reside in California illegally, but these people are not entitled to government-funded healthcare.
Many illegal immigrants come here from countries, including Mexico, where they are entitled to basic healthcare provided by their government. If people want something they have a right to obtain, they should go where they can enjoy their entitlement.
