Readers React:  Garcetti’s first year as mayor was a success

To the editor: Your review of L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti’s first year in office was a fine example of journalistic nitpicking. The body of the piece gave appropriate credit to Garcetti, but its opening sentences left many people who may not read in detail with a negative impression of the mayor’s performance. (“Grading Mayor Garcetti’s first year,” Editorial, June 29)

Garcetti has done an excellent job of setting realistic goals and even achieving one big one — the revitalization of the Los Angeles River — not expected to be within reach.

We’ve had mayors who grab every headline and try to fix things not within their express authority (such as the Los Angeles Unified School District) while ignoring matters they are expressly elected to address (like potholes and the accessibility and transparency of government). These have been some of Garcetti’s priorities in the first year.

Give the mayor a little time to get going with a really tough job.
