Readers React: Republicans should try ignoring Donald Trump

Share

To the editor: GOP concerns about Donald Trump are legitimate. In an overcrowded primary field in which all of the candidates hope for a chance to assert their views, the Trumpster uses up all the air in the room. Other Republicans not only can’t get a word in edgewise, they can’t get a breath. (“5 experts reveal how to win a debate with Donald Trump,” Aug. 3)

In campaigns I’ve managed, one tactic that at times made the most sense was to simply ignore a loudmouthed, self-important opponent. Remember that old line, “What if they gave a war and nobody came?” So, if no one bothers to fight Trump, he’ll be left shadowboxing.

I’m a Democrat who feels a sense of schadenfreude about the Republicans’ concerns over Trump. Still, the country needs a functioning, effective second major party for many reasons.

Maybe it’s time for the Greens to start working harder. I bet they would leave Trump and the Republicans gasping.
